Fresh Basil in Your Kitchen

There are many benefits to basil

I love fresh herbs and when I saw potted fresh basil being sold at the supermarket I quickly bought one. Wow, what a nice addition to my foods. I love having fresh basil in my kitchen. I particularly like adding fresh basil leaves to my sandwiches.

benefits of basil, basil for anti aging, basil for mosquito bites, natural remedies of basil

The main reason I bought the fresh basil plant was because I simply like the taste of it and I knew I will be using it a lot. I do not have a “green thumb” so this is a very convenient way for me to have a fresh herb.

I have been using basil for a while now and I thought, geeh, it must have some healthy benefits so I decided to check that out online….where else? 🙂

I have to say I am so pleasantly surprised by all the  benefits basil has that I will make sure my little plant stays healthy providing me with a lot of fresh leaves for months to come.

In addition to the many benefits of basil you will find on most sites when searching online, I want to mention a couple that might not be so readily found:

Basil is great for mosquito bites

Simply rub the basil leaf on your mosquito bite and reap the benefits. It helps with itching, swelling and disinfecting.

Basil  also has awesome  anti -aging effects

For this it is recommended you use basil extract.  This has the ability to destroy harmful agents and prevent damage caused by certain free radicals.

Are you using basil? If so what is your favorite way of using it?

    Anxiety and food

Natural remedy for anxiety and depression?

It’s Sunday morning and I started my day (after eating breakfast) surfing Facebook. I didn’t really plan on staying there for too long….like most of us I got side tracked and read a very moving article about depression and anxietyanxiety and food, beef bone broth, depression

I feel somewhat useless and helpless when it come to dealing with people with anxiety or depression. I realize that I am very lucky not to have suffered from these scary and very real diseases. My problem is that have no skills on dealing with or talking to people who are suffering…I feel very inadequate and I never seem to say the right thing so I just listen most of the time.

There are people who discount the seriousness of mental illness but in my experience most of the time they, just like me, don’t know how ot react or what to say when faced with the situation. We hear a lot about the stigma of mental illness and how most of those suffering feel shunned or even afraid to mention their problems because of the stigma. I personally wish there would be more education on how to deal with people who are close to us and need our support and help.

    But I digress…..

Let’s talk about this natural, easy to make home remedy for depression and anxiety

When I was reading the article about anxiety and depression this morning I scrolled down and read the comments people left. Love reading comments…

anxiety natural remedyOne comment in particular grabbed my attention BIG time. It started like this: “I have suffered from anxiety, low self esteem, paranoia etc until recently when I started cooking homemade beef bone broth from organic beef bones on a slow cooktop for 48 hrs…”. Thank you Yvonne Forsman for posting your comment. You are helping a lot of people with your openness and willingness to share.

Yvonne shared her experience with Dr Mercola’s bone broth recipe. I love any kind of natural home remedy and this seems to be a classic.

If you suffer from anxiety, depression or any kind of mental illness please give it a try.

At worst you have some good tasting soup for a while.

Please leave a comment. Have you heard of this remedy, have you tired it? I respond to every comment.

Aging is not optional but having fun is….

Do you we really have to kill ourselves at the gym and go on miserable diets to be happy and fit as we age?

These ladies have way too much fun. Love the fact that they got the skipping rope out just as when they were little girls and started playing and even showing off.

Who says you cannot skip rope on the street when you are in your seventies or so….It is usually only our minds and perceptions that stop us and our bodies …

It seems that these lovely ladies have flexible minds and flexible and fit bodies at an advanced age. Something most of us are striving for.

      Now what is the secret?

      Personal trainers? …. Hmmm…Don’t think so…

      Vegan diet?……Hmmm…Not that either

Diet pills, right? Going to the gym? No carb diet? Crossfit training? ….

      You find the answer…..

      Enjoy 🙂

Cooking for Special Occasions Can Bring Out the Best in You

cooking for a special occasion, Cooking healthyMost will agree that when we start cooking for a special occasion tension and stress starts to build up inside of us. The stress and tension comes from worrying about details like:

        • What is the best dish or set of dishes to serve for this occasion?
        • How many are coming?
        • What ingredients to get?
        • Where is the best store or grocery to but or purchase the ingredients?
        • Who might be allergic to what?

These together with other questions and trying to make it the best meal for that special occasion doesn’t have to stress you out. Planning and preparing for a special occasion can actually be fun, it can bring out your creativity and your ability to be organize and do well with the task. Follow some of the tips below to enjoy not only the special occasion but the actual cooking part too :).

Try to find out how many are coming for the occasion so you can prepare enough food. If you are uncertain about the number of guest coming it is always best to overestimate but not too much. Any extra food can always be used next day or frozen or you may ask the guest to take some home.

        • Choose simple and easy yet healthy and delicious meals starting with the appetizer to the main dish to the dessert.
        • It is always best when you are not rushed. A lot of us like to procrastinate and wait till the last minute before we do what we need to do. If some parts of your dish can be prepared hours or days ahead, than do it.
        • Avoid trying out new recipes especially if you plan to make it on the very day of the said occasion. It is always best to try out new recipes when you are not rushed and you have time to do adjustments to make the dish right.

Help is just a click away, many sites on the internet have many recipes that you can pick from. Again opt for simple yet delicious and healthy meals to prepare. What would be the point of going to all the trouble of cooking a fancy dish if it will just cause you to stress out and later on not enjoy your guests company because you are too tired.

The important thing when cooking for a special occasion is that not only the guest enjoys your food and the company but you, the host should also enjoy not just cooking for the occasion but being there.

Special occasions are suppose to be a time we look forward to being together with family and friends. You can eliminate or avoid the stress and tension of having to cook for a special occasion if you just stick to the tips given above. The key is planning properly and allowing as much time as possible.

Change Lifestyle Instead of a Diet

Some words are commonly associated with other words like when we say “lose weight” immediately the words like “diet” and “exercise” come to mind but these words “diet” and “exercise” are also easily associated with words like “failure” and “impossible”. This is exactly why we should adapt the concept ofLifestyle change“Changing Lifestyle Instead a Diet.” That way, you are still aiming to shed those unwanted excess pounds and lose weight but starting with the right attitude.

Most of us when we get on a diet program even before we begin we are already bound for failure since we almost always associate diet with failing or thinking

it is an impossible task. More than 50% of the times we start on a diet and we end up failing because of the following:

          • Eating is an addiction for a lot of people.
          • Many people use eating as an excuse either to cope with stress or as a reward for doing something good.
          • Dieting means eliminating eating certain kinds of food.
          • The feeling of deprivation when certain food is not allowed in a diet.

In the quest for losing unwanted pounds, there is a more realistic possibility of being successful if you change your lifestyle and the way you give meaning to the food you eat than just starting another diet plan that is mostly likely to fail.

Change your attitude towards food and change your lifestyle. Here are some steps you can use to start:

          • Find a strong but realistic motivation like improving your health.
          • Set simple daily goals like eating more servings of vegetables and less dessert. (instead of two slices of chocolate cake, settle for 1 slice)
          • If food is your way of rewarding yourself for a job well-done, find a substitute like going to the spa instead of getting a scoop of your favorite ice cream.
          • If eating is your coping mechanism for stress or depression, try substituting it with going to the gym or going for a walk or running.

Condition yourself that changing your lifestyle will not happen overnight and it will take a lot of patience. Sliding back to your old habits doesn’t mean you should just give up right away. Again changing lifestyle will take a lot of commitment and dedication and that it’s ok to slip once in awhile as long as you get back up and be more aggressive and determined when you try again.

Most of all, don’t view your lifestyle change in a negative way, instead tell yourself you want to be a better you. If you “fall off the wagon” you can always start again tomorrow but always aim to be “on the wagon” more days in a week than being off.

Always look for the positive results that you have made through your change in lifestyle because when you notice the good things you only see success and not failure.
